Any Good Restaurants in Colchester

I moved away from Manningtree at 18 - never had the money then to try anything smart myself but my folks still live round there so hope this helps:

A little way out of Colchester but Maison Tolbooth in Dedham Vale always had a good reputation. Not sure about its culinary rating but its got a good occasion rating, I'm sure.

Hintlesham Hall (not sure of exact location, but I think its near Hadleigh, just into Suffolk) has definitely got a good reputation for both service, style and food.

If you venture as far as Harwich, the upstairs restaurant at The Pier Hotel is superb for seafood and a sophisticated air. And ace fish and chips, dressed crabs or prawn salads downstairs.

If I have any other thoughts, I'll let you know.

PS - if local foodies question my judgement, I'm prepared to stand corrected... I rely on memory which I hope remains true!

The Warehouse Brasserie (sp?) in the town center is supposed to be good although I've not tried it personally. There are various Chinese/Indian/ Thai places in town which are all much of a muchness. Out of town there's a much better choice, Marthas Vineyard and The Swan (that might not be right) in Nayland are both very good. The Ancient Briton in Ardleigh is again very good but not particularly cheap.
