: IMO, the Oasis is a must-see restaurant for the visitor to Austin. It's : not haute cuisine, but the view is spectacular. On a sunny day, it's a : wonderful experience.

Yes, it's a nice view, but...jeez, one of the first things people told me when I moved to Austin back in '90 was "the view is great, but don't eat at the Oasis!" Since then, I've noticed that slamming the food at the Oasis seems to be something of an Austin cultural tradition.

Still...I ate there for the first time just a couple of weeks ago (my employer picked up the tab) and My Humble Opinion was that the food was basically unremarkable but quite overpriced: 3 enchildas with rice and beans for ~$10!?!? And it wasn't like I wanted to get up and dance about the meal, either.

If this is true, it's a win/win, IMO. Ninfa's has some good recipes, but the difference in food quality between the Navigation (in Houston) location and all the others was significant. Everyone I know who raved about Ninfa's had eaten on Navigation.

Serranos knows how to produce quality Mexican food, and produce it consistently.

Ninfa's certainly had their share of problems. I'll bet Serranos turns 'em around.

No, uhhh, it's closed. Yeah, that's right, it's closed. Don't bother going!

Oh hell, I'm not a good liar. It's open, and the lake taxi to lakeway is $1. Shades is actually the closest restaurant to my house, so I go there often when it's open for the season. They have the best buffalo wings in town. The only thing I'd avoid is the CFS (pre-breaded frozen crap).
