Here my answer to a similar question in another forum:

Stetson - In the Hilton Palacio del Rio, i.e., downtown on the Riverwalk, one level above the river. Open for dinner only. Try for a table next to the windows so you can watch the barge- and foot-traffic and see the lights. One of the 3-4 hot young chefs in town.

BIGA - North of downtown in a converted Victorian (I think) house in a historic district. Owned by another HYC and his baker-wife.

L’Etoile - In Alamo Heights, still further north of downtown. Emphasis on fresh, fresh, fresh.

Grey Moss Inn - In the country, several miles north, but well worth the drive. My wife and I went recently for our anniversary. (Map in yellow pages ad.)

Not in the same category, but think about Schilo’s (SHE-lows) deli downtown on Commerce at the river. German place that’s been around since pre-WW I. Inexpensive breakfast, lunch and dinner. Famous for, among other things, split-pea soup and homemade rootbeer.

For Tex-Mex I like Rosario’s on S. Alamo (in an urban neighborhood called Southtown) and Los Barrios on Blanco Road. If you want to try real Mexican food (not Tex-Mex), La Calesa is a good choice. In an old house at Broadway and Hildebrand, across from Earl Able’s restaurant (a good landmark -- everyone knows where Earl’s is).

I hope this will be helpful and that you enjoy your stay.

David

For good Tex-Mex away from Riverwalk, try Mi Tierra or Pico di Gallo. Not far from downtown, both owned by the same family. Good grub, good value.

Also try Los Barrios on Blanco.
