La Fogata on Vance Jackson, northwest part of the city. Huge menu, great atmosphere. You can eat inside or outside. All three of the following recommendations are on Broadway in the 3000-4000 block--- not too far east of Trinity University. I ate at all three of these during May of this year. They all have in common moderate prices and good service. My idea of good service is that your food arrives promptly, the waiter checks back with you in a subtle way periodically without interrupting your conversation in an obsequious fashion when it is obvious that you don't need anything. In no particular order: Guiseppe's. We ate indoors and had dessert on the deck. It was very pleasant. There were 3 of us. Two had wine, one or two appetizers, salad, main course, two desserts. Bill was about $60, not including tip. I had veal marsala. It was quite good. My husband had garlic shrimp dish, which he raved over--it was outstanding. Can't recall what the other person had. Cappy's: I had "Snappy Cappy," which is a broiled red snapper. It was excellent. The atmosphere is more intimate than Guiseppe's, noisier, I guess. Though it was a Friday night and it's graduation and prom season, so probably the other places were noisy that night also. I can't recall the tab, but it was a little more than Guiseppe's., I think. Barcelona's: Our daughter and her friends had told us this was "pricey. " (They are college students.) I was amazingly pleasantly surprised. There were six of us. We had a bottle of sparkling wine, a dessert or two, at least two people had appetizers, six entrees, and the bill was $93. I had Chicken Valencia, which featured an orange-flavored chutney. I rarely order chicken at restaurants, but wanted to try this. It was very good. My daughter had a paella dish, and so did my husband. They reported they were very good. The beef entrees at these places are more, of course, but none of us ate beef, for various reasons. If you do, you'll spend more, probably. We didn't get to La Madeleine, another favorite place --- also on Broadway, north of Hildebrand. But I missed it. One of my favorite places---the coffee is great! My daughter likes Mi Tierra in El Mercador--the marktplace downtown. There is so much to see and do in San Antonio, you can't miss having a good time. Hope this is helpful.

Texas Monthly magazine's restaurant reviews are reliable, IMO. Check their web page at: http://www.texasmonthly.com/food/resto/south.html#San Also, I recommend Gray Moss Inn, north of town a few miles. David
