Last week, a number of people who frequent the various austin newsgroups, went to dinner at Mango's on Guadalupe. The company was delightful! The food was quite mediocre, in my opinion.

I had a "Jungle Curry" which wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good. I love fried rice with curry, with chicken and shrimp (Indonesian Nasi Goreng is what I had in mind when I ordered), but the Jungle Curry wasn't spicy or hot enough to make much of an impression. The margarita was decent. Ulla had a mangorita (shudder!) which she liked. It was apparently potent enough for Meng-Jang to get a buzz from hers, but I didn't feel my margarita did much for me.

Service, for seven people at a table, was decent. They made no objections to putting two tables together for the party and seemed eager to oblige. I did have to ask for water twice, and I don't think anyone else got served water at all (although, maybe no one else asked). The food appeared promptly enough, and a mistake with Ulla's dish was corrected immediately and gracefully Portions were very generous, but they prefer quantity over quality, I'm afraid.

The company was so delightful, I didn't notice much about the decor. The food, however, will not entice me back to this establishment.

I agree. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, which was two types of pork, a white cheese, and a tangy sauce. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding. I'll probably give 'em another try in the future, but I'm not rushing back.

Mango's has a live music venue in the back, so it looks like they'll be having a strong music focus. It's not your typical restaurant stage; more like Stubb's BBQ.

The best thing by far about the outing was the company!

G'day

Here's another me too.

We had some sort of creamy dip - crab and garlic maybe ? The bread supplied was toasted slices of baguette and they gladly brought us more when asked. Not bad dip.

I had a pina colada which was passable - not bad, not great. They did not offer me water, but brought it when asked. They never refilled my glass though.

Ulla had a "creme of cilantro" soup which apparently wasn't worth Rajat's mention.

When Joe chose the calypso pasta (seafood and spices) the waiter suggested that the coconut pesto chicken pasta was preferable, so I ordered that. I think Joe like his waiter-unpreferred pasta more than anyone else at the table enjoyed their dish.

My pasta actually wasn't bad. The serving was large enough to feed me for lunch the next day too. There were large chunks of zucchini, yellow summer squash, eggplant, sundried tomato - all lightly cooked, not mushy or greasy. Large chunks of chicken that was also cooked well - not dried out like a lot of restaurants serve with pasta. All of that, plus fettucini, cooked in a garlicky, basil pesto, which had the added bonus of coconut. Now I don't think it was cooked with sweetened coconut or it would have been unbearable, but it did taste sweeter than it should have. I guess they used the unsweetened dessicated coconut, but then added some sweetener to it. I could have done with out the sweet. The coconut almost looked like it had been added after cooking. In fact, the dish tasted a lot better the second day after it had all be recooked together. So interesting - not enough to rave about, but I'd consider having it again if I felt bored with other nearby options - not so likely since Thai Kitchen and Changos is just up the road.

I don't know how rajat didn't notice the decor - it was over the top trying to be caribbean/beach/calypso/I don't know what. There were many brightly coloured wooden fish hanging from the ceiling forming a school around our heads. Also an interesting metal artwork sun. The whole inside is done up like the inside of some sort of tropical hut with the tropical beach theme everywhere. Palm trees, posters of the beach.

Unfortunately there are also tvs hanging everywhere so that people can be distracted from conversation by their favourite team sport. OK for frat boys, but this is something I really don't enjoy.

Close to the time we were leaving, they rang a ships bell and started offering testtube shooters of some bright pink, obviously alcoholic, seemingly frozen or slushy beverage. I dont' think any of us tried it. Clearly another frat boy thing.

Outside there's a big patio shaded by camouflage netting. Could be a good venue for music. I'm guessing I wouldn't enjoy the sort of clientale they look like they're aiming for.
