Kum By Yah on Manor...

Saw a new place up on Manor across from Hoovers called Kum By Yah (I think) that was advertising 'soul food' and since we were SO disappointed in Hoovers version and Dot's is good but too damn far to drive :) we thought we would give it a shot.

What we got was pretty good food for not a whole lot of money and not located in South Dallas (i.e. Dot's)...

The menu there is small, seems to be a fixed menu with choice of 3 entrees, 3 veggies, and a desert selection. I opted for the chicken and dumplings and fried corn. I prefer the dumplings here to those at Dot's, as they are some- what thinner, and therefore not a big ole hunk o dough like up there, and the dish was more like the stew that I have always thought c&d should be, rather than the chicken with dumplings with a chicken sauce over it like you get at Dot's. A little greasy like it should be, but didn't over-do it.

The fried corn is kinda hard to describe, but tasty... fresh corn off the cob, that has apparently been floured and fried a bit, then stewed with something that makes it sweet. I have probably failed at the description, but it is worth a shot.

Tablemate tried the veggie plate and got fried corn and smothered potatoes (pan fried potatoes with bell peppers and onions "very good") and black eyed peas... all of which got a thumbs up from him.

Also available were fried corn cakes, which were what my grandpa used to call hotcakes, not to be confused with pancakes, which look a lot like them, but not near as tasty.

Meals were a la carte, but we got out of there for ~7 each.

The other entree choices for the week were meatloaf and roasted chicken, which we did not have the chance to try but will definitely go back and try soon. Kum By Yah is at 1917 Manor Road and is open for lunch M-F. Not sure of weekend or if there are evening times...
