| Okay! I have just started seeing somebody whose favourite food is Italian. I
| was wondering if anybody can recommend a good Italian restaurant to me for
| Valentines day. If you have any idea about price-range that would be very
| helpfull too! Thanks.

Romeo's on Barton Springs Road seems to be a favorite Italian "date restaurant . . ." I've heard good things from several sources, but we haven't gotten around to trying it, yet.

I'd suggest getting reservations NOW, no matter where you choose.

And if you can't, head down to a bookstore and get a good Italian cookbook ;) Marcella Hazan's books are excellent, enterainingly written, and full of interesting food. Even if you're just a novice, it's easy to manage something nice. A little homemade pasta, a simple sauce of diced sea-scallops, white wine, olive oil, a little garlic - add some crusty bread, some fresh fruit and cheese for afters . . . a nice white wine, dry and maybe a little spicy or sharp. And "eating in" on Valentine's Day assures that you can avoid the headaches of traffic and crowds, and get naked quickly if need be ;)

[BTW - Is such advice off-topic? I mean the cooking, not the naked. This is austin.food, but mostly it seems to be austin.restaurants . . . I don't mean to stray from the charter, if there is one - I just never tire of encouraging people to read Marcella's books ;) ]

Trattoria Grande would be good. It's very upscale. The kind of place where you can dress up and not feel like prom dates at Denny's (as opposed to a lot of Austin places...but this is one of the reasons i love Austin!!). expensive...it's in the Renaissance Hotel at the Arboretum.

Romeo's is ok...kind of romantic but...hmmm...i don't know ..valentine's comes but once a year.. midpriced though

for my money, i would take her to Basil's. A little place off of Lamar on 9th?(look it up). Great food, very romantic, but you do pay for it.

More recommendations (outside of checking DejaNews, austin.food seems to go over this once a month):

Tocai
Madam Nadalini's
Carmelo's
Vespaio

Am still waving the flag for Basil's, my most favouritist Italian place in town. :) Quiet with soft lighting... excellent food and wine selection.

Now I just needs me a someone to take me there. :)

Well, yeah . . . that's why I recommended it! It's very trendy, and it IS a bitch to get a table. However, the food is in same league as any "Italian" restaurant in town (quotes for the purists). The good news is that there is almost always seating in the bar, and they have the full menu available there. So, you could in theory eat much more quickly than if you waited for one of their relatively few tables.

Not terribly formal, not terribly expensive . . . . think Mezzaluna, and you'll be in the zip code. Much more nouveau than Basil's, and louder, too. Plus, it's a block from my house, so I can get on the waiting list and then go home!

Carraba's is a safe-yet-dull bet, but too noisy for my tastes. The original restaurant in Houston was great, but that was years ago. Vinny's definitely sucks in my book.
