For years now I've been looking for a place to get good Iranian-style kabob in Austin (the minced beef kabob known as "kudideh"). After Armen's moved north and faded away I had to resort to getting my kabob fix in Houston.
Well, the other day I found where the Iranian food in Austin has been hiding and it's quite a surprise: the Taco Arriba in the food court at Northcross Mall! Taco Arriba has a small sign labeled "Chelo Kabob" and a full Iranian menu, in addition to the tacos. It's a bit pricey for a sideline at a taco stand -- kubideh with rice goes for $5.99 and other dishes are higher -- but it's not bad. They cook it to order and seem to be baking the big rounds of flatbread on the premises, too. Not quite as outstanding as the places on Hillcroft in Houston, but easier to get to.

Iranian kabob in Austin -- Taco Arriba?!
NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 09:47:30 CDT Xref: pale-rider.INS.CWRU.Edu austin.food:4711 An excellent place for Gyros and Iranian Kababs is a little place called Oasis (not the one on the lake). It is on Merriltown in the strip center where Gumbo's used to be. Make a right on Merrilltown from Mopac (past Wells Branch Pkwy). The bread is to die for. Absolutely consistent about the quality of food. The service is slow sometimes. I have eaten there twice a month since we moved from Houston 1.5 yrs ago. There is a small place in Merriltown called Oasis that has pretty good Kabob (and other similar food) that I really liked.
Unfortunately they are only open for lunch on Fridays. I think they are open for Dinner most days.
