For other TexMex and Mexican options:

Maudie's (Lake Austin Blvd or South Lamar)
El Mercado -- best migas in town (South First)
Curra's -- inconsistent, but often different in a good way (Oltorf) Guero's (South Congress)

Also, West Lynn Cafe has brunch (about the same as Mother's, but a bit more "upscale"--crepes, for example) Fonda San Miguel has a weekend brunch buffet, flat price is about $25. I've never been willing to pay for it since I wouldn't eat any meat and would feel cheated, but I've heard it's good. Dim sum brunch at Burnet/Ohlen (I can't come up with the name of the restaurant now, but someone will). Check up on Dim Sum thread here for a couple of other places doing this.

Even eating meat, we felt cheated at $25/per, which didn't include drinks of any flavor. Good food, yes, but overpriced for the experience.

You betcha: Tien Hong.

sorry, but no, that simply wasn't my experience (and I've, reluctantly,
visited one or the other Jim's every once in a while over the decades.
some people insisted that the one at 183 and IH-35 used to be better,
but I couldn't share that feeling, not 20 years ago, not the last time
I accompanied someone there before it closed). And Jim's coffee ALWAYS
made me sick to my stomach (and I'm not a real sensitive sort) and their
black tea doesn't deserve the name. I mean, we are talking 'at the
      bottom rung of quality' here...

AFAIAC. I don't mind other people going there.
Less waiting elsewhere (this town is getting annoying in that regard, too)

Cisco's on 6th, about a mile east of I-35.

I've got to disagree. Jim's is (IMO) a good example of the traditional coffee shop. I like their breakfast tacos, and they have surprisingly good tortilla soup.

OTOH, if you're looking for a place with lots of Austinesque slacker attitude, you'll probably not like Jim's. :-)
