I've got the job and bought the house. But being from Santa Barbara, CA, the availability of decent places to eat breakfast is downright pittiful. Every place I've tried down here is horrendous. The only place that even comes close to a decent meal is the Kirby Lane Cafe, but they completely ruin the experience by having knightmarish service. Ugg! I'll never go there again. Are there any good old fashioned breakfast places in the north/northwest austin area that serve great food, have great service, good coffee, and actually pan or griddle fry their potatoes fresh, instead of this silly deep fried breakfast potatoes thing which seems to be popular with places such as the Lone Star Cafe (mediocre food, worse service). Any suggestions would be considered :) TIA

Help! Looking for good, old fashoioned breakfast houses in Austin
NNTP-Posting-Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 07:42:13 CDT Xref: pale-rider.INS.CWRU.Edu austin.food:5698 Been to Magnolia Cafe yet? It's not north or northwest though. What do you mean deep-fried breakfast potatoes? Like McDonald's or the shredded on your plate kind? As for Kerbey Lane, clearly no one informed you ahead of time that no one goes there for the service, they go there for the food. Sounds like you went to the one central to me. The only Kerbey that has service worth mentioning is the one on South Lamar...but don't be surprised or uppity when your waitperson sits at your table to take your order...that boy's a really good waiter and he's terribly sweet too. Good luck. Me wrote: > I moved here 20 months ago for a job and to be able to afford to buy a > house. I've got the job and bought the house. I had a friend that went to some place off the main road in Bastrop (a little farther but from what he said worth it) to a restaurant with ? Castle in the name for a breakfast buffet that he said was just like home cooking. Real biscuits and gravy - all the traditional breakfast products that were home made. He used to go out there every Sunday, religiously. Any one know about this place??? Some of the nastiness people experience is provoked by their own boorishness. For instance, notice how awkward it is that you didn't give even give us a phony handle to work with. Not hard to understand why you were referred to as "faceless". The "worker bee" part, that was pure prejudice.
That said, we were pleasantly surprised by the breakfast buffet at Trudy's North Star on Burnet near 183. Omelets made to order. It's inexpensive enough that you don't feel obligated to eat too much...although that's easy to do.

Small portions too, they must cater to retired people with no appetite. Kirbey Lane Cafe 183 north: That's where I had to strangle anyone to get anything! (I gave them 3 tries and gave up) IHOP: Surprisingly good compared to all the other places I've eaten at here. Their omelettes are HUGE! But you can't call it home cooking. Waterloo Icehouse on N. Burnett: So So, all the way around, spotty service and inconsistent food (tried this place around 7 times, prolly won't go back) Heck, even McDonalds doesn't serve Egg McMuffins for breakfast! So I'm learning to cook my own meals, but I would still enjoy going out once in a while. FYI: I'm a single Man, If there are any Single ladies out there, who don't mind cooking a little bit........ oh, wrong newsgroup sorry :) On Fri, 24 Sep 1999 20:55:01 GMT, mdahNO_%_SPAMmus@iNO_%_SPAMo.com Mike D. wrote: >>> Maybe one should live in the central city, then, instead of whining about how >>> lame the N/NW suburban food choices are. >> >>The writer was comparing *California* to Austin. > >The writer was asking about the food choices available in *N/NW Austin*, and >complaining that the ones she'd previously tried weren't up to snuff.

They only do breakfast and lunch. Not all of the restaurants ther are good by any means, but there are a fair amount of really good ones. This is out of your area of town, but worth the drive nonetheless: The Bakehouse, on Manchaca (that's MAN-chak to you) just north of Stassney. Honest to goodness homefries, shrimp omelets, mint sprigs in the iced tea, and fresh-baked pastries to boot. All very reasonably priced, I might add. Their dinner menu is a little spotty, but the breakfasts can't be beat. BTW, I've eaten breakfast in Santa Barbara. Not sure what you're bragging about. Waiters in bathrobes may make good copy, but the food wasn't all that great.
