For really "fine" dining, you will need to go to Dallas, or to a few spots in Fort Worth. When we moved to Denton 20 some years ago, the chamber of commerce answered my wife's question "Where do you go to eat?" with the comment "Well, there's usually a line at McDonalds on Easter Sunday" Things have changed alot, but Denton still cannot support a really fine restaurant. So there are a number of pleasant spots - and a large number of chains and dumps. My recommendations (or rather, opinions): Guiseppe's on North Locust - pleasant Italian, entrees $8 - 15. Fish dishes have generally been pretty good. Milano's in Carriage Square shopping center near UNT on Avenue C. Italian, and it's been in business over 20 years. For steaks, there is the Trail Dust 10 miles east of Denton on US 380, red checker oil cloth on tables, kerosene lamps, in a barn like building, steaks cooked over mesquite. Real Texas (or Real Old West since there's a similar place in Tucson). There's also the Ranchman in Sanger (I think - never eaten there, although I've heard about it). Again lots of local color - check with the locals. There's also an Outback in town. One final note - Texas has quaint liquor laws. Denton is wet for beer and wine only. If the restaurant serves the hard stuff then it is also a private club, and you will need a membership. They may or may not charge for it - most do not. Herb Schaake
