Joey's is getting lousy reviews and Sipango is Cal-Ital, so I suppose they are ruled out. However, I highly recommend Star Canyon. The food is texan. Not southwestern, not tex-mex, just texan. Emphasis on texas ingredients...that sort of thing. Quality is excellent, prices are moderate to high. Reservations are impossible to get between 6-10 on weekends, so plan on eating at an odd hour.

DALLAS grub
For a really good steak house, try Paul's Porterhouse.

Very fine craft beer and food. Also unique to Dallas is Kathleen's Art Cafe, Lovers Lane east of the Tollway. This close to the Inwood theater, a Dallas landmark. Gloria's on Lemmon features Cuban/Guatemalan fare. All of the above are moderate, fairly casual and no reservations or attitude problems. For grins try the Fog City Diner ;). For an elegant meal try: The Riviera at Inwood and Lovers, Dakota's on Akard or Beau Nash. But my absolute favorite is Chez Girarde on McKinney!! Make sure to get a souffle. For barbecue--definitely Bakers, either in Deep Ellum or on Upper Greenville. For fried chicken--Bubbas on Hillcrest. For cajun seafood--Pappadeaux on Lemmon and Cedar Springs or (if it is still there) Natchez on Henderson For the best "soul food" Celebration on Lovers west of the Tollway You may want to try La Madeleine for a ceasar salad. For nightlife: Quiet: The Library at the Melrose Hotel Chic: Art Bar in Deep Ellum or Inwood Lounge on Lovers at Inwood Village connected to the Inwood Theatre. Also try--Sambuca (say hi to Calvin, he is 8 feet tall and 400 pounds), The Green Room, and Trees (okay, the last two are a plug, I went to SMU with the owner--but they are great places!)
If you're going to Dallas, I wouldn't hold my breath for good Tex-Mex; as a rule, no city north of Austin will have good Tex-Mex, and Dallas is by far the worst for this particular cuisine. I'd recommend Routh Street Bar and Grill, which is a fun little place with plenty of good beer and an outstanding menu as well. It's new, which means it will inevitably be packed, but prolly worth the time. It was by far one of the best places I've eaten at in Dallas, hands down. Also, if you like Bay Area food, check out the Fog City Diner -- great in San Francisco, not too sure about the Dallas locale. Should have most of the same food. Melissa Marie (Austin, Texas)
