Including drink and tip you can get away with a $5 bill at the Wheatsville deli, Chango's, Thundercloud, the Fiesta Mexican food bar, a taco and an agua fresca at El Sol y La Luna or Las Manitas, Great's at H-E-B Hancock, small shrimp creole and a soda at Eaves Bros. Seafood on Airport, and all those Pho houses already mentioned... oh there must be some more.

Where's Gerg Steeb when you need him?

cheers,

Kim Phong. We live for the Pho, we die for the Pho...

: Newish Vietnamese place behind the Jack-in-the-Box on Burnet just : south of Braker. Forget what it's called.

I don't know their name, either. I tried 'em, but IMHO but there's much better to be found in Austin.

For flat out value for your Pho dollar, nobody beats Pho Nam (on 183, South side of the road, across the parking lot from Sea Dragon). Their "small" bowl is bigger than most other noodle joints' "large", and they don't skimp on the "goodies". Don't even think about ordering the "large" bowl of pho unless you haven't eaten in 24+ hours. Oh, and it _tastes good_, too.

These days, Pho Nam and Tan Tan are the only places we frequent for noodles.

But these guys are across the street from where I work, which counts for a lot. Better than JitB, sub shop, bbq, & chinese buffet, not to mention the PRC cafeteria.

Name's Pho Huang, unless I've forgotten it again in the last half hour.

Oh, more cheap eats more or less in this area: kolaches from the Kolache Shop(pe), subject of its very own thread about two months ago. Very, very cheap lunch, if you're into the meat-and-cheese-in-pastry thing. About half the price of yer typical stuffed croissant.

Wok n'Roll on Burnet for a whopping order of veggie fried rice, The Ommlettry for a half order of black bean chalupas OR a bowl of their fabulous potato leek soup, or a short stack of pancakes Upper Crust bakery for a Mediterranean croissant, EZ's for a large Caesar salad and half order of fries, Central Market cafe for tortilla soup and fries or a BBQ sandwich/fries, Einstein's Bagels for a couple of their foccacia/pizza breads

I agree...W&R is great, but as a tip to those
who have not been there, order from the second
menu which is not as Americanized. I will
admit, I do love American-Chinese food, but
the entrees on the other part of the menu at
W&R are great much better. I recommend the Chicken
Scallion with Flat Noodle. It is wonderful. Also, any
of the Lo-Meins or the pork combo rice is great.

Yea, you can get out of the GM for cheap. (Can't quote prices off the top of my head, sorry.) If Gus is on the grill, you are in for even more than a culinary treat. He is a magician with a spatula.

Oh, two more places: (I hope these haven't already been covered)

Juan and a Million on Cesar Chavez. The Don Juan taco ($1.80) can feed a small army.

That new place in Hancock Center: Freebirds World Burritos. Decent college-dude (or hippie? or California? hell, I dunno) -type wrap grub and way yummy Quesadillas clock in at less than $5.
