...mmmm. La Costena.... The "california" burrito fat with rice and black beans is the burrito I first new when I moved to this fair land. It's still my favourite. I recently found a new source of "california style" burritos here in Austin.

Changos is in the old Wrapido spot at 3023 Lamar, across from El Patio. I read somewhere, probably the Chron, that it is run the same people as Manuels. Their menus don't seem to have anything in common though.

Changos bills itself as a Taqueria, but they also sell Burritos, Quesedillas, etc.

The tortillas are hand made right there (I watched them do it). Not with a machine, but with someone squishing a piece of dough by hand with a tortilla press and cooking them on a griddle. I wasn't so keen on the corn tortillas used in the tacos, but the wheat ones on the burritos are great !

There are half a dozen salsas to choose from. I have trouble choosing between the verde, the fogata (charred tomatoes & tomatillos, onion, cilantro and jalapenos) and the nortena (roasted tomatoes, poblanos, onion and cilantro).

My favourite is the maximo burrito - beans, cheese, rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, salsa and sauteed mushrooms. Instead of mushrooms you can have chicken, beef, guacamole or mahi mahi.

The batidos (fruit smoothies) are thick and refreshing - the papaya is my favourite. There are libations for the alcohol-appreciaters. Dessert includes empanadas and flan.

The burritos are california style, fresh, fat and reasonably cheap starting at $3.95 for a burrito without meat. After going every week for about a month, I've noticed the customer numbers increasing, even though the kiddies have gone on holiday (sigh of relief). Guess that's a good sign.

FYI, that's Guadalupe at that point:-)

I'd second the recommendation for Changos. We went there last weekend after reading a recommendation on a restaurant directory web page. I got the mahi-mahi taco with rice and beans and my boyfriend got a chicken super burrito, I think it was called.

We both enjoyed them, though I didn't particularly like the rice and beans (the rice had a slightly fishy taste--not bad, just unusual). I really liked the fish taco alot (it had a nice smoked flavor), but it was a bit small (it would require at least two to constitute a meal for me). On the other hand, the burrito was HUGE and delicious. More than enough for a meal (or two?) for $5.95, I think?

I agree that the tortillas were great. I liked the corn alot, though. Nothing like a fresh corn tortilla in my book.

I sampled a couple of salsas and liked them both.

And the design of the restaurant was nice, too. Stylish but not stuffy.

IMHO,
lisa
