"Best" is pretty subjective according to the individual. I'm partial to the two Stephen Pyles' restaurants - Star Canyon and Aquaknox. However, I would also recommend Dakota's, downtown. Reservations a must for all three.

AquaKnox is about a 10 -15 minute cab ride. Star Canyon, maybe 15-20 minutes. If you go after 7pm, you will minimize your travel time. Both restaurants should have no problem arranging a cab back to your hotel.

Dakota's is new American eclectic - covers a broad range. Good pastas, interesting fish and meat dishes but not bizarre. It's also a good place for lunch.

I've been to Dallas way too many times in the past couple of months. Have

been extremely impressed by the overall quality of the food (I don't say that often at all). This goes from cheapish lunches to more expensive dinners.

Some of the places of the top of my head:

III Forks - Steak house, incredible steaks, great great soups, highly recommended Atlanta Bread company - very nice quick lunch spot, good sandwiches Texadelphia - again a quick lunch joint with good (almost) philly style steak sandwiches Red Fish - once I had a great lunch with some excellent gumbo, another time for dinner
    the salmon was overcooked
Blue Mesa Grill - very nice food for medium priced southwestern food, good margaritas,
a good place to go on the nights you don't want to go too crazy with
the food but want
     nice dinner
Cafe Brazilia - excellent lunch spot. Don't know about dinners BBQ - I've had a bunch of places and have not been disappointed. Sonny Bryants in
Arlington (?) is supposedly the best one
Star Canyon is supposed to be incredible but I've yet to be able get the timing right for dinner there.

MaTC is an excellent choice! I may be late but here are some suggestions for your other meals:

An early lunch at the original Sonny Bryan's on Inwood north of Harry Hines. If you can restrain yourself to a single chopped beef sandwich, splitting an order of onion rings, you will be in good shape for your dinner with Dean Fearing.

Another quintessential Dallas lunch would be to grab a burger or dog at Goff's on Lovers Lane. The owner is one of the more colorful characters among Dallas restaurateurs (the statue of Lenin out front should be a clue!)

A place that would be great for either lunch or dinner is just down the street from Goff's...Kathleen's Art Cafe. Everything is interesting and excellent...I have never had a bad meal there, it's a family fave when any of us are back in town.

Another recommendation for your other dinner would be my favorite TexMex...Herrera Cafe. They have several locations around town....the (almost) original on Maple near Oak Lawn is my favorite, take a cooler full of beer as they are in a dry zone. The location off Denton Drive serves alcohol.

If you want to go upscale for both dinners I would try to get a reservation at Star Canyon. Everything is wonderful...

Have a great trip...Dallas is a great eating town...let us know where you wind up going!
