Thanks for any advice. While I have not tried it myself (yet!), what about Sambets on Research and Spicewood Springs? They apparently now serve food, including gumbo. I'm going to try it soon, but am certainly not an expert on Cajun food. Hmmm! After checking their webpage (www.sambets.com), I think I'm going to try them tomorrow... rajat

Best bowl of Gumbo in/near Austin?

I seem to remember that Quality Seafoods was mentioned in the past (Airport at 290) and the Beignets place on West 6th has it as their Friday Blue Plate Special, if I remember right.

I used to really enjoy "Gumbo's" I've always enjoyed the gumbo served at Castle Hill. I was pleased to see that Mirabelle, (step-?)child of Castle Hill, decided to put it on their menu, too. Don't know if the bowl would be big enough and whether the price is right, but it sure was good.

Both places have great Gumbo-at least while I was there! Lamar served a fairly decent gumbo, albeit not hot enough (add some Louisiana red at the table). Plus some mighty fine complimentary cornbread to round it out. Haven't seen any posts lately from Terry on Lake Bastrop, but if memory serves, he used to recommend that Captain's joint on N. IH-35 that looks like a ship submerged in a parking lot. I paid them a visit on his say-so. Whatever you do, don't go there. My gumbo was treacly, with bits of shell mixed in, and the grand prize bonus of a small blue rubber band submerged in the bowl. In fairness, when I showed them the rubber band, the gumbo was taken off the bill. But even for free, it was an experience I would rather not repeat. And Terry, if you're still around--you owe me five bucks.
