Zoot, in a re-done home just west of downtown has interesting food and a good wine list.

Bar-be-que is great at the County Line on the hill and on the lake. Very generous portions, so go hungry.

Louie's 106, on Sixth Street is stylish and crowded. Go early.

I visited Austin about 8 months ago and had a great time....

Louis 106 for yummy tapas and fun atmosphere. Cedar Street for a martini & some swing.

I'll heartily second Sharon's recommendation of Louie's 106, and note that it has an absolutely outstanding wine list.

I lived in Austin for 2 years (just moved back to the Bay Area a few months ago), and my favorite restaurant is Castle Hill Cafe. On Fifth Street between downtown and Mopac. Really interesting food combinations, just a touch of southwestern but not enough to consider it ethnic. Fun but not too noisy, whimsical decorations but more nice/elegant than funky. Good wine list, good service. No wait on weekdays, but crowded weekends.

Mars, just a bit north of downtown, has Asian-inspired cooking, with some Mediterranean thrown in. Really cool atmosphere. Definitely "different." Can't really remember the wine list but at least decent.

Zoot, off of Lake Austin Blvd. east of Mopac, is a little more upscale than those two, and has inventive california-type cuisine. Good wine list as well.

All of these are what I consider moderately priced, entrees maybe $10-$15 (Zoot the highest of the three).

Enjoy!

If Jeffries is still open (I'm pretty sure it is), I'd suggest you check it out.

Steak: Austin Land and Cattle Company (Lamar and 12th): NOTE: don't be fooled by the TEXAS Land and CAttle Company. they are not related. This restaurant has excellent steaks/seafood/etc. The deserts are incredible. Generous portions. I'd say, moderate/expensive.

Southwestern: Brio's on 6th street.

Barbecue: Stubbs on Red River and 8th OR you can travel out the the Salt Lick

Indian: Taj Palace excellent food.

hope this helps.
