Applewood Farmhouse off 441 in Sevierville serves an excellent breakfast. Lunch and dinner are quite good. Beyond this, however, you'll find all chain stuff.

In Gatlinburg, Calhoun's -- great barbecued ribs, microbrewed beer.

In Pigeon Forge, Cornflour -- mountain cooking.

The Park restaurant in Gatlinburg is beautiful -- huge wooden beams, very earthy. But we were disappointed in the food, considering the prices.

In Cherokee, forget it. You'll have better luck finding a decent restaurant in one of the nearby towns. A good one is the Jarrett House in Sylva -- family style mountain cooking; i.e. country ham, fried trout, biscuits and gravy etc.

I ate at Calhouns in Knoxville for the first time Saturday. Excellent - highly recommended. Ribs, fresh cut fries, slaw, biscuits, etc were all excellent. I tried a specialty side dish called Spinach Maria. Fairly salty, but again, quite good - basically creamed spinach with various cheeses and a touch of a spicy hot flavoring.

I'll have to retract a previous recommendation about the Apple Barn, however. Ate there this morning. Most everything was overcooked, dry and unappealing. I've previously eaten there several times with very good experiences, but it'll be a good while before I try them again. Waffle House would have been much better.
