Niki,

There are some wonderful sushi places here in Chicago. As a matter of fact, if you have last week's Reader, you'll see in Section 2 that they just did a run down of favorite sushi places around town, with price ranges for every budget. For that matter, you can search their website for something in your price range/neighborhood, and generally get a smattering of reader reviews (from locals like me) which will give you the "real deal." Here's their URL:http://www.chireader.com/cgi-bin/rrr/form.cgi

Personally, for inexpensive but consistently fresh sushi, I've been going to Shiroi Hana on Clark Street (just south of Wrigley Field) for years. However, if you want to impress a date or are looking for sushi fare that leans toward the exotic, there are far more upscale places to go. And if you are looking for menu selections that are more in keeping with restaurants such as Benihana's and Ron of Japan (stir fry, hibachi grilled, etc.), you probably don't want to focus your search on local sushi places but more on those places that typically fall under the generic "Japanese" categories found in phone books and city-specific directories. (Please note that I only use the term "generic" to refer to the catch-all category for both mom-and-pop and chain restaurants--such as Benihana's--which serve entirely different meals.)

Wherever you choose: enjoy!

Shanti
