I recently travelled to SA with a group, and we had a really great time. Most of our meals were taken care of, but we did have a few nights where we were all on our own. I can recommend against a Tex-Mex restaurant called something like "Papa Luke's" in Capetown in an area that used to be called District Six. We only ended up there because it was late and it was near our hotel. I thought the food was bad.

On the other hand, we had really fine meals at clubs called "Mama Afrika" and "The Green Dolphin" the latter of which is a jazz club on the waterfront. Both places I tried game like ostrich and crocodile. Meat, especially beef and lamb, is plentiful. All the game I tried was great.

Prices to me seemed very reasonable, especially compared to US east coast restaurant prices. The Green Dolphin had prices like 40 to 60R, which runs about US$8 to $12. Considering that it is an upscale place on the waterfront, I was surprised. Lunchtime, also reasonable. A hamburger and chips ran something like 10R (US$2).

By the way, it seemed that most hotels provided breakfast. Although I've not travelled to the UK, I figured that SA breakfasts were much like British breakfasts: eggs, broiled tomatoes, slightly cooked bacon, beans. Not much variation, except for occasional fresh fruit, yogurt or muesli.
