The Moorings is nice and has great harbor views. The Whitehorse Tavern is one of the oldest taverns in the USA....it is now a 4 star restaurant in a very historic setting. Enjoy! Newport RI - Recommendations?
NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 09:17:41 PDT Organization: @Home Network Xref: usenet.INS.CWRU.Edu rec.food.restaurants:51727 Great choice!!! It'll be great then. We just back from our annual extended Labor Day weekend in Newport. (We go up on Friday and come back on Tuesday to avoid the congestion on the highways.) Cheeky Monkey is a fun restaurant that has nice quality food and good service. Reasonable. Ask for Audra, if she's working (and tell her the couple she told about her planned trip to Costa Rica told you to ask for her). Elizabeth's (in its 9th year) on Thames would be great for your anniversary dinner. The atmosphere is wonderful, full of mismatched antiques (tables, chairs, dressers, secretaries, etc.). The music is at least romantic, soothing, relaxing. The night we were there it was all vintage (1940's) Sinatra (played at an appropriate volume for a restaurant); great background music. It's a BYOB (although there's a $2.00 per person (big deal) corkage charge. Elizabeth (the owner and chef most nights) has an unusual approach, though. A couple orders one dish which comes out in one large plate (from which you serve yourselves). The platter has the entree (from steak to chicken to lobster to salmon to vegetarian ), vegetables (hari coverts and kale came on our dish), a pasta (which had a fabulous penne al dente in a marinara sauce that had a wonderful and non-traditional addition of fresh fennel--all of her herbs screame freshness), and what I would best describe as a garlic bread/bruschetta-type "thing"). Desserts are offered; coffee was fresh and strong (as we like it). Service was, as seems to have been the case this past summer in Newport (and San Francisco, also, it seems) wonderful with waitresses over from Ireland for the summer, but they'll all be back home and in school now, so waitresses may now have become locals. The only criticism we had was the use of cream in most dishes. While it wasn't overpowering, my wife recoils at the word (due to her healthy obsession with weight control, healthy eating and exercise which keeps her 52-year-old body looking like 32--can't say the same for me at the moment, but enough about us). Go; enjoy; the atmosphere and food are wonderful. If I recall others, I'll follow up, but these two stand out as worthy of an evening's dining experience. Hope you enjoy; I know you will. (By the way, it goes without saying, SEE THE MANSIONS! The Elms (Berwinds' home (the coal baron from the Main Line (Grace Kelly, etc.) outside Philadelphia) now has a self-paced audio tour that you and your wife will love. The Astor's mansion is also fun. You're received by a butler in coat and tails as if you have arrived a day before a dinner party in the 1890's to which you (and the other guests) have been invited so that you can tour and become familiar with the home. It's a hoot (as they say in Canada)! Have a wonderful anniversary. Robert J. wrote: > > Wife and I are going to Newport for our anniversary. Would appreciate any > recommendations. There are some other good restaurants up the peninsula towards Providence as well. Wanderer wrote: > My wife and I enjoy the Black Pearl...not the bar side, but the other more > upscale side.
