Whilst this is all true, in ordinary restaurants that do not look too pretentious you are unlikely to be 'stung' for more than a few pounds so go ahead and try the olives, bread and tuna pate if you feel like it. It can be a long wait until the main course arrives. There is one dish which I can't remember the exact name of, "porc Alentejo" or similar which is pork with seafood ( mussels ) in a rich sauce that is worth seeking out. It's a speciality nearer the Lisbon area but I expect you will find it on the algarve too. You are more likely to get stung badly if you accept the patrons invitation to start sampling all the vintage ports! Andy R ------o0OOO0o-------

They are excellent and not very expensive. Big salad and a bottle of Casal Mendes Rose wine. John
