One often reads about good places to eat in Pburgh in this group; but what
about places to avoid? That's info that's almost as important.

Here are my top five places to avoid; no particular order:

 1. C.J. Barney's. Burned food; surly staff.
 2. Gullifty's. Inedible food; food spilled on consumers.
 3. Katz N' Kids. Good food; evil owner.
 4. Silky's. Despite it's rep, I've always found the food to be dry, tasteless,
 bland, and slow in coming.
 5. George Aikens. Perhaps this goes without saying.

In addition, here are five more to avoid:

 1. Peter's Pub -Somehow the food remains dry despite the liberal coat of
    grease.

 2. The Inedible O -Just walking in here qualifies you for a heart bypass.

 3. Whisky Dicks -Not only are the ads offensive, but the food is just as
    tasteless.

 4. The Italian Oven -If you seriously think Italian is like this....
Try going to one of the many WONDERFUL Italian resturants the burgh
has to offer. Italian food is just too wonderful at any of the small
family resturants to take this place seriously.

 5. Any Chinese place -I've gone to 6 or 7 so far and have yet to find any
    that is not over-sauced, under-spiced, over-salted, and ill-serviced.

(Flame disclaimer: I do not intend to claim that going to 6 or 7
constitutes all 1000 pages of Chinese places listed in the yelow pages,
but I do claim that the Chinese here is sub-par.)

Add the Squirrel Hill Eat & Park to this list. God, the lousiest
service I have ever, ever received was there, though I'll spare you all the
gory details and leave it as: we waited an hour for cold food that we didn't
 order.

I've been to the Squirrel Hill E&P on many occasions. The general rules
 seem to be:
   - service will never be better than adequate
   - groups of more than about 6 will always get rotten service
   - even though there may be lots of customers late at night, the waiter-to-
table ratio will still be bad
   - at night (say, after 10) waiters sometimes disappear for 20-30 minutes at
a time, presumably because they can get away with it
