TAJ MAHAL: My vote for best Indian in town

I've been to Sree's Food several times (having friends in O'Hara township made
it less fearsome to go there), and I've been to Taste of India near Penn
 hospital
many times and I've been to India Gardan, Darbars, Star of India (I only
mention for completeness), but I finally tried the new restaurant on
the block (the block being ATWOOD STREET), and my vote for the best Indian
restaurant in the Pgh area is the new restaurant:

                 TAJ MAHAL.

I've eaten a lot of Indian in England, in Figi, in Australia and in
other parts of the U.S., e.g., in Ann Arbor, S.F. Bay Area, NYC, DC
etc. , and I can say that the Taj Mahal
is in an equivalence class with the best places I've tried outside of
 England (no
I have never been to India). I liked Sree's and the food at Sree's is
 totally
different that at Taj Mahal (probably from another part of India), but the food
at TM seemed better than what I've sampled at other places in this town and
really, very, very good. The food was quite tasty, but not heavy and oily or
creamy. The spices and food was quite fresh and delicious. The pakora and
Chicken Tikka appetizers were wonderful (excuse me if I misspelled or
 misremember
names). The Allou Paratha was great, so were the complimentary papadmas.

There were four of us and each entree (we decided to share them) was wonderful.
Desserts came with the meal and the rice pudding and the ball of something in
 honey were wonderful.

The place is very pleasant, the service was great, the food was wonderful
and the price was very reasonable. The menu is more limited than some
restaurants but every thing was good and there was ample variety, IMO.

So, why am I going on at such length? BECAUSE IT WAS A SATURDAY NIGHT
AND WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE THERE!!!!

The place was really, really good. I went to Spice Island last weekend
 and that
place was packed. I like Spice Island, but it is IN NO WAY better than
 this place.
And this place will go under if people won't go there. We need more
good restaurants in this town and in Oakland, in particular. The food
 was fresh, tasty,
better than any other Indian in town (if you want to disagree, I'm willing to
say it is in an equivalence class, but I like this type better than what I get
at the other Indian restaurants and this one is closer to the universities).

I am not affiliated with the place, and never went before. I intend to go back
soon. I hope others will go there so that we don't lose it.

 Thanks.

Well, perhaps it is too bad that we can't get Taj Mahal and
Siamese Kitchen to trade places; however, given that is
unlikely to happen, I would like to point out that India
is a very large country with different ethnic groups and
probably different types of "Indian" cuisine. I like Spice Island
and Siamese Kitchen too. But I believe the the food at Taj Mahal was
more varied (and in a positive direction) from
*any* of the other Indian places in town than Spice Island
 is different from S.K.

But while we are on Spice Island and TM for lunch, let
me suggest a good meal at Spice Island for lunch: I tried
the fish soup at Spice Island for lunch--it is a meal in
itself. In Australia I used to eat a Malaysian dish called
Laksa (sp?) and their fish soup reminded me of that, and it
 is great!

So please: don't just eat at Taj Mahal for their good deal
for lunches. Their dinner food was very reasonable
 and wonderfully tasty.

I wish I could agree. I had the lunch buffet there Wednesday
and the food was quite bland. I _think_ it was Indian, but
that's only on the basis of resemblance to previous experience.

on the other hand, last week I had an excellent Lamb Biryani there.
