Sharp Edge

Tried the Sharp Edge last nite, around 6.30 pm and found that the
beer & pizza was every bit as good as the popular acclaim led me to
 beleive (e.g. excellent).

At times, however, the service was mind-bendingly slow. Not that
the staff wasn't friendly; they were very nice indeed. But fifteen
to twenty minutes' wait for a beer that wasn't a slow-pour? Ouch.

Anyone else have any experiences like this there?

Well, I've eaten there twice in as many weeks. Lets start off with the
good points. First of all, the beer list at Sharp Edge is the absolute best I
have ever seen in Pittsburgh. Their selection of beer on tap (maybe 20-25)
include some of the finest American Microbrews (Anchor Steam, etc...),
excellent European imports, and some rather exotic beers that I adore and have
never seen on tap in this area (Several different kinds of Trappist Ales from
Belgium, and I believe there was also one lambic as well). In addition to this
impressive list, they also offer about 60 or so (maybe more) different brands
of bottled beer from all over the world. If this wasn't beer heaven, they also
offer cask-conditioned beer from a small American microbrew (the waitress
didn't know which brewery, Im going there tonight to find out). They get one
cask per week (which is a huge oak barrel of beer) and tap it on Wed night at
6pm. Last week their cask beer was a traditional porter and it was simply
heaven!!! One sip and I wanted to cry! BTW: the cask conditioned beer only
has a post-tap life of about 4days, so if you want to try the cask-conditioned
beer, go there on Wed, Thurs, or Fri (if it lasts that long).

The beer selection at Sharp Edge will ensure that I will continue to be
a faithful customer, although I do believe that this is the only saving grace
of this place. The service, although friendly, is unbelievably slow. If you
sit at a table, plan on a 15min wait to receive the first round of drinks.
Don't expect to see any food (even appetizers) for at least an hour. In
 addition the system (or lack thereof) of service is also extremely annoying;
the waitress who takes your order is usually not the one who brings out your
food or drinks, so there is constantly a server interrupting everyone by asking
 "Umm..did you order the ….?".

The food in and of itself is terrible. I’ve been there twice. The
first time I ordered a steak salad. It came with wilted lettuce and was simply
mediocre. My friends had various sandwiches, they were OK, but it did appear
as though everything was made from processed, frozen food. This suspicion was
confirmed when, upon my second visit, my friends and I ordered a large pizza
with the works. The pizza was made from a frozen pizza shell, and it was
undercooked and tasted of freezer burn. Yuck! Coming from someone who makes
his own pizza and foccacia dough, I was really put off.

My advice would be to go there for a beer (or several!) but eat at home
(or elsewhere) before you go. You are also better off to sit at the bar, and
not let a waitress get your beer for you. I was initially a little concerned
about the neighborhood (as it is only about two blocks from a notorious housing
project in E. Liberty) but they have a well-lighted parking lot and the
immediate neighborhood seems to be clean and well-kept.

Let me know what you think, Its nice to have another place to
       go for good beer.

             Bill
