PITTSBURGH RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATIONS NEEDED

Breakfast at DeLuca's on Penn Ave. in the Strip District. Penn is a
oneway street heading toward town, so from downtown Pgh. go out bound on
Liberty and make a left on 23rd or 24th Street, then a left in one block
on to Penn. DeLuca's will be on the right side of the street. The
"Strip" is a hot food shopping area, and was once the rail terminus for
produce bound for Pgh. markets. There are still many wholesale and
retail food markets. Most action takes place on Penn Avenue, between
17th and 25th., though Smallman Street (one block closer to the river
from Penn) is comming on strong. Across the street from is Pa. Mac. a
great pasta, cheese, olive oil, etc. wholesale\retailer.
DeLuca's is an old, well worn restaurant, with a history or serving
truck drivers and produce yard workers breakfasts at 4 or 5 in the
morning. Now they mostly serve Strip shopers. The place is casual,
booths with no padding, a small "stuck in the back" non-smoking section,
sit at the counter near the grill.
DeLuca's also has a very good early lunch, every thing is cooked from
scratch, we love their mashed potatos. Promantie's is the hot place for
lunch in the Strip. Dating from the days when truckers needed a meal,
which could be held in one hand, the Promantie brothers put french fries
and slaw on freshly sliced bread along with an ample chunck of grilled
 meat or cheese.
The Strip also has some of the best coffee shops (LaPrema) and pastries.
Saturday is a mod seen, Sunday it's mostly closed except for the
 restaurants.
DeLuca's on a Sunday morning before a Steeler game is a tradtion for
lots of folks. Weekdays on the Strip is the best.

 > WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO PITTSBURGH AND WOULD LIKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A
 > VARIETY OF RESTAURANTS, INCLUDING THOSE SUITABLE FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER
 > WITH THE KIDS, AND A SPECIAL EVENING OUT ON THE TOWN TYPE PLACE.
