Well, I lived in Pittsburgh as well as worked as chef there so here goes:
As far as local favorites... check out Primanti Bros. (cheap, AWESOME
sandwiches, truely unique!) located around town, but the 2 big ones are in
the Strip District and Oakland. Ask somebody, they'll tell you. For
seafood, check out Wholey's Seafodd Market (also in the Strip). It is
where Dan Quayle stopped for lunch. Again, inexpensive w/ lots of local
flair! For a more ethnic scene, check out Squirrell Hill. It is populated
w/ great delis and middle eastern shops. For Italian (real, hardy stuff.
Not fancy and glamorous), head to Bloomfield. There is a place called
Dels. Very good, honest food. And lastly, my favorite restaurant in the
entire city is called the Grand Concourse. It is located in Station
Square. It is a HUGE, grand, old restored train station. It sits right on
the banks of the Allegheny river. It is a real experience, but you will
pay for it. There are also a ton of little shops and outdoor stands that
surround it.
Well, I hope this helps. I mentioned a lot of different parts of the
city, but it really is a small town; no problem getting around! If you
need any more info, please feel fre to e-mail me!! Ohh by the way,
Fallingwater is a reall haul from Pittsburgh! Its more than a few minute
drive...
