Having lived in Philly for 5 years and recently moved to San Diego, I miss the restaraunts there quite a bit. Some of my favorites:

The Saloon (near 4th and Bainbridge or so)

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Slice of Heaven

Susana Foo

Rose Tatoo

Stroli's (in a war zone, but best cheap italian food ever!)

I would reccomend these all very highly!!

Michels, Walnut & 16th (I think it's 16th), very interesting menu; Bistro Bix, 114 S. 12th St.;, Girasole, 1305 Locust Street; Susanna Foo; Striped Bass, both on Walnut and expensive but excellent, Dmitri's, South 3rd - I could go on and on but that's enough to start with I'm sure you'll get lots more from other sources.

Cafe Nola, South between 3rd & 4th.

Just ate here for the umpteenth time in 15 years and it's still a great place - fits your description: unique food, fun and friendly service. atmosphere can be relaxing if you don't go on a saturday night or on Mardi Gras ;-)

I've liked this place ever since it opened, and seriously hope that their recent financial problems get resolved, I'd hate to see it close...

If you love italian food, Victor's Cafe is THE place to go for both wonderful food and an amazing atomosphere. All the waiters and waitresses are opera singers, either studying at the Curtis Institute or working in different productions. Prices for entree range from 15-25, and expect to spend a few hours, but you won't know where the time went!!!

If you are in for a fun evening, try El Mariachi on 24th St. for good mexican and a mariachi band. Its a small place so you may want to make reservations. The White Dog Cafe in University City is always good. Zocalo on 36th is excelent if you are looking for gourmet mexican.

Happy Dining!

My feeling about Victor's is that the food is barely edible, but the experience is terrific. Maybe that's why it's been around for so long.

My wife and my brother both rave about the Warsaw Cafe in Center City, although I have yet to experience it.

The Saloon, 7th and Catherine. Light atmosphere, great food and even better service. A little on the expensive side but worth every dime!
