Mad Mex new menu

Went to Mad Mex last Friday. As noted here before, they've changed
the menu substantially. (Still no chorizo burrito.) I decided to get
the same old spicy chicken burrito, though, since I wasn't terribly
excited by any of the new selections.

Beware! The old selections have changed as well.

The new spicy chicken burrito (and, I would assume, the other burritos
as well) no longer comes with guacamole and sour cream; those cost
extra. It does come with a mild jalapeno pepper and some salsa, and
with some sort of sauce on top. The sauce seemed to me like a bland
russian dressing; I could definitely do without it.

It also seemed to me that the rice inside the burrito had changed; it
was steamed with tomato juice (a la spanish rice), and I could swear
that it was much drier before (almost like a basmati rice) with no
tomato. ("No tomatoes were harmed in the making of this burrito.")

One of the employees there claimed that the rice hadn't changed in the
two years since he's been working there; he even went so far as to
bring me a little bowl of the stuff and claim that that's what had
always gone into the burritos. If that's true, I'm Richard Nixon.
And I am NOT a crook.

Anyway, I give a thumbs down to the new burrito style. I liked the
 old ones much better.

I think the new menu is good on the whole. There are lots of new dishes
for vegetarians and most of my old favorites are still there. I did
not like that they took the black beans off the Nachos. This might be
another case of having to request them special... Also the fish taco is
horrible. I cannot believe that they put it under specialties of the
cook let alone on the menu at all! A fish taco at Max Mex is a hard
corn taco shell (like you buy at the store) with a fried fish fillet
(like you get in the frozen food section) and 2 french fries in it. The
only thing to add to it is the Pico de G sauce. Tasteless and dry as a
desert. I sent it back. I was hoping it would be similar to a great
fish taco I had in Santa Fe. Maybe I should read the descriptions of
 the new dishes more closely.

Actually, El Yucateco (both red and green; green is hotter) is one of
the classic Mexican hot sauces. I've always been impressed that Mad
Mex puts it out, rather than caving in to what the "general public"
thinks is "hot" and putting out some generic non-habanero-based
vinegar-tomatoes-salt-peppers sauce that couldn't flame its way out of
a paper bag soaked in kerosene, which is what 99.9% of all other
 restaurants do.

If you don't care for the El Yucateco, here's a simple suggestion:
don't eat it. But leave those of us who *do* eat it alone. ;)

P.S.: Chemical heat and taste are not mutually exclusive.
