Thought this group might be interested...

The Japan Diner at the top of Rodi Road in Penn Hills offers a sushi
special for $20 (they call it a "buffet", but it's all made to order).
Nice selection of about 35 varieties of maki and 20 of nigiri sushi,
well worth a visit. Also hibachi and other Japanese entrees for those
who prefer them. Friendly staff, and never a wait.

(No, I'm not affiliated with the Japan Diner. They've simply chosen a
relatively obscure location, and it would be nice if they could make a
 go of it anyway.)

On a whim, a friend and I went to Japan Diner last night around 9 to try the 'buffet'. It was actually quite fun - we just sat at the sushi bar and ordered 1-2 maki or nigiri at a time. The staff was very attentive, but then we were one of only two parties there at the time; hopefully they get more traffic during normal dinner hours. As far as the food goes, it wasn't really exceptional in quality but the fish was generally quite fresh (salmon and clam particularly; the scallops could've been better though) and I was quite happy. Also, the eel was really good; we finished with a couple pieces that had just been cooked and were piping hot - yum!

For $20, being able to pick exactly what we wanted and eat as much as we wanted was a major draw - we'll probably be back repeatedly. For people that aren't sushi addicts and don't generally spend $20+ anyway, it might not be worth their trouble. Thanks for posting about this place; my friends and I will definitely patronize it in the future.

It's in the plaza with the Giant Eagle and the Pharmor near the intersection of Rodi and Frankstown.

We were just there today. I got the chirashi and some ala carte sushi with my wife. The service was very good. It was the best sushi I've had in a long while. Quite fresh and well presented.

About the place: A half dozen or so tables, a sushi bar, and 5 or 6 hibachi(?) tables... the ones where they cook at your table.

My wife thought it was cute that they give you "points" for every dollar you spend... Once you have enough you can trade them in on some goofy trinkets and toys they have on display.

They do take-out as well as dine in.
