Hi
The Gran Canal is one of the best Italian restaurants in Pittsburgh. Very
similar to a small trattoria that you might find in Italy. I highly recommend
it. They do not serve wine, but you can bring your own. It would be hard to
spend more that 120 for 4 people. I would call ahead and try to find a
convenient time. Its a very small restaurant, and there is frequently a wait.
Furthermore, there is no convenient or comfortable place to wait.
If you want to blow a little more money, the Pittsburgh Fish Market downtown
at the Doubletree Hotel is outstanding, as is the Steel Head Grill at the
Marriot.

Help for good restaurant
I would recommend for something different (and Gran Canal is good), Old Europe on the Southside. It's gotten lots of rave reviews with three stars from Woodene Merriman of the PG and thats hard to do. Eastern European food like you've never had. I have mixed feelings about Portobello. They are erratic, sometimes wonderful, sometimes crappy, even for the same dish. For example, I loved the chicken marsala. One night, I just said yum with every bite of the delicious sauce. The next visit, the sauce was barely there, about a teaspoon of it. Same for service, salads and some of the other dishes. While I always prefer BYOB (they used to be) I am more than willing to buy wine if I like the restaurant. When Portobello changed from BYOB we found that their wine list was very limited, and not really very nice kinds (more the types of wines that in the 60's made people think Italian wine was nasty stuff, rather than the modern houses & styles that show the good qualities of Italian wine) I admit, I have not been there since before "the Mt. Washington tornado" (was that 2 years already?) so they may have re-adjusted. I am usually willing to retry things, I had been to P. 6-7 times before the accumulated negatives outweighed the things I liked. Mayhaps if someone gives another point of view, with a few details, I'll try again. Christine Mary S. wrote: > Portabello's on Mt. Portabello's on Mt. Washington on Shiloh St. is an excellent place. Prices are reasonable too. We were just there with friends and we were all impressed. I've always enjoyed going to The Back Porch in Speers, PA. Pretty much everything on the menu is good. - Szelim - > Jean-Marc C. wrote: > > > > I want to take some friends of mine to dinner, and I was thinking of the Gran > > Canal Cafe in Sharsburg, what do you think??Is it a good place?Or may be > > could you suggest an other place (medium price but good,$150 to $200 for 4 > > people) > > > > Thank you for your suggestions.
