Most of these are in the downtown/historic/South St. area which is locally called Center City.

French: Le Bec Fin, Duex Cheminees

If you are looking for "price is no object"
and romance, the above two are for you. Le Bec
Fin gets consistently rated as one of the best
restaurants in the country.

Also you can try:

Italian: DiLullo's Centro, Garisole, Upstares
at Varalli's, Portofino, D'Angelo's, Metropolis Trattoria, Baci, Portofino

Asian(Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, some Japanese and Korean): Chinatown area

Indian: Tandoori Palace(40th and Chestnut in W. Phila.)

Seafood: Sansom St Oyster House, Bookbinder's Seafood House(15th St.)

Steakhouses: Babe's, Morgan's, Ruths Chris

Cajun/Creole: Cafe Nola, Magnolia Cafe

Eclectic Restaurants: The Astral Plane, 16th St Bar and Grill, The Garden, Judy's The Knave of Hearts, Cafe Einstein, Carolina's, Catalina's, Mezznote, Rose Tattoo Cafe, Callowhill, Warsaw Cafe, Waldorf Cafe. There a couple of Iranian places at 18th and 24th and Lombard. And two Ethiopian places in University City near the U. of Pa. campus.

Diners: American Diner(two locations, 42th and Chestnut and 5th and Spring Garden), Melrose in S. Phila.

Again this a *very short* list. You can get more detail from either the City Paper(weekly), Welcomat(weekly), or Phila. Magazine(monthly). Especially look in the Phila. Magazine for restaurants on the Main Line and other 'burbs.

Some annotations and addenda:

The Ethiopian places Karen mentioned are: Dhalak (46th & Baltimore Ave) and The Red Sea (no relation to the place w/same name in D.C.) (45th & Locust).

Another pair of really good, reasonable Italian places in Old City:
--La Trattoria dell'Artista, 3rd and Cherry
--L'Osteria dell'Artista, one-half block south (towards Arch) on the same side of the street. (Yes, the same people run both.)

Also in Old City, a delightful Afghani restaurant:
--Kabul, 104 (102?) Chestnut Street

Or do you want your evening's meal and entertainment wrapped up in one? There are two Moroccan restaurants near South Street (Fez, on 2nd below Bainbridge, and Marrakesh, on a small alley just west of 4th above South) that serve a full seven-course meal as it would be in a Moroccan home (on a large table, no utensils) for a fixed price. It's quite an experience, and at Fez, they throw in a belly dancer.
