My wife and I had dinner last night at the Peoples Indian Restaurant on Penn Avenue in Garfield friday evening. The restaurant is on the corner of Penn and Eveline (?)--this is the stretch of Penn between St. Francis Hospital and East Liberty. This place is now our favorite Indian restaurant in the city by a long shot. We ordered Pakora Chat appetizer which was served cool. the pakora were at the bottom of the dish with potatoes and chick peas to cover with a delicious tamarind sauce. I ordered Fish Tandoori. I'm not sure it's traditional (and even if it is I imagine Salmon is not the traditional fish) but it was outstanding. Cubes of salmon had been marinated in that reddish marinade typical of Tandoor prepared dishes and then quick roasted in the Tandoor oven. It came to the table on a sizzling hot metal plate with peppers and onions and a couple of lemon slices. It was light, moist, and delicious. Basmati rice and a plate of Dal large enough for both of us accompanied the dish. My wife ordered Lamb Saag and it was just about the best I've had. There was none of the characteristic "heavyness" that some Indian dishes have. it was light, full of flavor and very fresh. In fact, fresh is a fine word to describe the quality of everything we were served. Basmati rice came with it on a separate plate. A mango lassi, a sweet lassi, and an order of garlic nan comprised the rest of our dinner. I was stuffed by the end but enjoyed every bite. Total was $25 plus tip. There was a guy at another table nursing a beer and no sign of any bar of any kind so I think you can bring your own. The weren't very busy on a Friday night and they deserve to be. Please give it a try. BTW: If you are looking for Southern Indian style food there's Sree's in Sharpsburg and the Udipi cafe at the old Dosa Hut location in (I think) Monroeville. I haven't been to Srees in a while but I thoroughly enjoyed a lunch I had at the Udipi cafe a couple of weeks ago. It's a very low atmosphere place (i.e. plastic forks, styrofoam plates and bowls) but the food is fresh, good, and when we were there quickly delivered to the table. I had a Rasam soup I enjoyed, and and Uthappi (sp?) which I understand is the rice batter for a dosa cooked into a pancake (rather than a crepe). It was cooked with green chilis and was very good. My wife had a Dosa (the crepe version) stuffed with potatoes and peas and ? ---I think it was a Dosa Masala. Both were large and satisfying and very fresh. My soup could have used a litte more finesse (there was a big twig from some herb of some kind in it and the tomato core was included) but the taste was very good and at that price I didn't really mind. I just remembered that the Uthappi and the Dosa were both served with Sambar as well. Total cost for lunch was about $10 I think. It's on Old William Penn Highway right next to this gravel/cement plant. If you are out that way it's worth a stop. Jeff

You must be talking about the Taj Mahal restaurant, not too far away from where the Olympic Lanes bowling centre used to be.
