If you're looking to support a church's lent efforts in the general Oakland area, Sacred Heart on Walnut street does and admirable job with their Friday Fish Fry and in the other direction Saint Raphael's in Morningside goes all out... I've had both on and wouldn't hesitate to recommend either. If you are just looking for a killer take out fish sandwich and don't care about the origins Roland's in the strip makes a beer batter fish sandwich that is out of this world and unlike Wholey's (which I like as well) is available in the evenings for dinner. Not only is the sandwich delicious, it's huge, is served with their own seasoned fries and a small side of slaw all at a price that is almost to good to be true. The only down side to them is that since the fries are made from fresh potatoes if you have a long travel time from pickup to home, they lose their crisp kinda fast. Still take great though.
