I went with a group of people to the Fajita Grill last night. The Grill serves VERY good food. We had an interesting corn and chorizo (sausage) appetizer and I had roast pork fajitas. Jim had a combo platter of some variety. Caveats: Don't go in a big group. It's a small restaurant and the tables are pretty much designed for 4 people. Also, the parking there is minimal. Bring cash, they don't take credit cards. Ken, they changed their credit card policy on 1/1/95. Grant, it's on Old Clairton Road, about 2-3 miles from the Route 51/Yellow Belt intersection in Pleasant Hills. It's next door to Johnson's Pharmacy and across the the street from a Red Bull Inn.
Laurie,
Sorry to correct you, but by my odometer it was 1.2 miles
from Rte 51.
Anyway, I might as well give my critique. At our table we
had the "Boat dip" appetizer - one of those layered dip things with
refried beans, pico de gallo, queso fresco, guacamole (although we
had the guacamole on the side since I don't like it), and sour cream.
Very good. We also had the baked crab appetizer - crab, onion, cheese
served with tortillas.
For the main course I had conejo en salsa ancho (rabbit in
ancho chile sauce). It was very good. Someone else had the tinga which
is chicken and potatoes seasoned with hot chiles. I tasted it, and it,
too, was very good. Another member of the group had pollo en pipian
(chicken in pumpkin seed sauce). That, too, was excellent. The fourth
person at our table had enchiladas with habanero chile sauce. I didn't
taste that one! But he seemed to like it.
The food was excellent for the most part. A few minor complaints
like some dried out tortillas, but I'm sure that was only due to the
fact that they were short-handed and the restaurant was crowded. Also,
due to the fact that they were short-handed, I'm sure, was the "testiness"
of the waiter. In the past when I have been there it's usually been
at a much quieter time and I have always received great service. I hope
they solve their personnel problems soon.
Katei went to the new Fajita Grill last night. The food weas quite good although they were a bit chintzy with the mole sauce. entrees range from $6.50 to $14.00. Not to kick up the "authentic" arguement but... to me this was authentic mexican, not just tacos and burritos. However, our waitress was completely ignorant about the food, unable to name anything on the menu or make a recommendation. one of my dining partners told her to take the menu home and study it. it was quiet when we went in thursday night at 9 but when we left at 10:30 the place was packed. i don't know when they close the kitchen. i don't think their credit card system is operating so bring cash. also, it is byob with a $1.50 service charge (per Person?)
After having been frightened away for more than a year by the horrors of dining at Fajita Grill just after they moved to their new location in Shadyside, we tried it again last week. It has returned the mexican cuisine to its menu (by which I mean things other than the sort of thing one might find at Taco Bell, or, worse, Chi Chi's) and seems now to be back to its status of good mexican restaurant. So, if you've been afraid to go back, take courage and try it again.
