Try the Melrose at 15th and Snyder in South Philly. Also, do not leave town without trying hoagies, cheese steaks (Pat's in South Philly), Taylor Pork Roll, Tastycakes (sold in supermarkets),and Habersett scrapple.

Good luck.

No, no Robert. Not Pat's. Never Pat's! Gino's across
the street is ok, but my favorites for cheese steaks are
Tony Lukes - at 3rd and Oregon and Jims and 3rd and South.
For those who haven't stuffed down a cheese steak before,
put aside your better judgement and order it with Cheesewiz.
Only way to eat one. Best hoagies, by the way, Hog Island
in Center City (11th between Spruce and Locust) for an
Italian Hoagie and Chickie's,Federal between 10th and 11th
in South Philly, for a tuna special or a vegetarian hoagie.
You can get great scrapple at the Melrose.

      Enjoy,

Millie's is an architectural mess, and the food is so-so. The Mayfair over on Frankford Ave. is outstanding and not to be missed. The Oaklane Diner on Broad Street is also very good---their barbeque ribs are great. Bob's in the Roxborough section of Philly is worth a visit, as are the two American Diners, one in the University City part of town and the other in north Philly. They both feature rather "upscale" menus and awesome pies.

Just north of the city is DaddyPop's Diner in Hatboro---a must visit diner, though they are open only for breakfast and lunch. Their french fries are the standard by which all other fries should be judged.

You'll also find a string of diners on Rt. 30 just east of Harrisburg. Don't miss Reese's Ingleside Diner in Thorndale. The Cadillac in Downingtown is okay. There's also Jenny's in Ronks, the Crestmont II in Crestmont, and many others.

If you're heading north of Lancaster, the Sunrise Diner in Jim Thorpe is also excellent.

Oh no! Not Mil-Lee's! If you haven't been there in a while, you're not missing anything. I don't live to far from there and it has really gone downhill. They are a "greasepit". Everything is too greasy. If you're only in it for the desserts, go for it.

But go further north on Rising Sun and try the Quaker Diner. It's celebrating its 40th Anniversary soon so it must be doing something right. Besides they have a great lunch menu. Everyday they have many (between 10 -20) lunch specials very reasonably priced and they change everyday. These specials are usually priced between $3.95 to $6.95 and include soft drink and dessert. The rice pudding is great if your are NOT hungry, do not order the pot pies (chicken or beef) they are huge!

Also try the Mayfair Diner, Frankford Avenue a couple of blocks north of Cottman President Clinton was there.

If your into crabs try Chickie & Pete's. The best in Philly, no it's not a diner but it is a "gotta go there" place if your in Philadelphia.

      Good Eating.
