For breakfast, we often take our out-of-town guests to DeLucca's (sp?)
in the Strip District. It's sort of quintissental Pittsburgh, and a
walk through the Strip is an experience in itself.

We also eat at Dave's Diner on S. Ardmore Blvd. Traditional Greek-owned
 PA diner.

One place, I DISlike is Bagel Nosh in Squirrel Hill. They has small
portions, a crowded atmosphere and bad scrambled eggs.

Actually, I have to confess that I'm generally disappointed with PA
breakfasts; they just don't measure up to those I've had in the South,
Southwest or Midwest. Ah, for grits and gravy in KY or biscuits from
the Mecca in Dallas. Sweet memories!

Please consider DeLuca's on Penn Ave. between 19th & 18th (a bus or
streetcar across the Mon. river in to town, then a bus up Liberty Ave to
 about 20th walk a block to the left and your in the Strip {Market}
district. Or better yet take a cab). While DeLuca's is not a classic
diner, it is a late 20's style eatery clearly pre-dating diners. In can
be crowed and loud on week ends, try setting at the counter neer the
grill. Try the french toast made of pgh's finest Itanian bread. Fresh
baked ham slced off the bone and fried with your eggs. The Fritatta(sp)
is great, as is the gas flame toasted bread.

Some folks will tell you about Vera's in the West End on Ritters on Baum
Blvd. in Bloodfield both are classics to some, but their food quality
does not approch DeLuca's and they arelocated it the middle of nowhere
wearth walking to. Also once your at the Strip visit Penn. Mac. across
the street and Prima Cafe' around the corner wonderful Italian pastry
and Expresso as well as middle aged & old Italian guys starting the
 day(sometimes in the afternoon)

 Please excuse the spelling

DeLuca's, Ritters, Pamela's -- Bah. You folks don't roam far enough.
The finest, most heart-clogging, obscenely generous, you-want-
coffee-with-that-hon breakfast in the area may be found at the

                   Gab-n-Eat

 (in scenic downtown Carnegie)

My favorites are the "hot sausage on the side" (which defies
description but is sort of a plate-sized fried glob of something which
was killed, ground up and seasoned) and the "Cajun style home fries"
(again, words fail me, but it's only $.10 extra over the regular home
fries, and clearly money well-spent). I'm not sure if these are on the
menu -- I just pointed at some guy and said I'll have what he's
having. It's that kind of place. Hell, they might even set you up with
some KY sauce if you ask nice.

Ritter's is a 3am drunken stupor type place, IMO. I have been there a only
once, I'll admit, but I was NOT impressed.

But that is the beauty of the place. Many a time I have been sauced to
the gills and found some kindly sober soul to take me on the pilgramage
down to Ritter's where I happily scarf down omlettes home fries and many
other things carfully calculated to shorten my lifespan enourmously.
Hell there's just about nothing else in Pittsbugh open all night. Cheap
 too.

I agree Ritters is over rated! There food is disgusting, and I am not a
picky eater! For example, One night when I was there I ordered chicken
with a side of mayonaise. The mayo was served in a bog round stainless
steal tub. While I was scooping some out for my sandwhich, I discovered a
big lump in the mayo! YUCK! Also, my fiance and I shared a piece of pie
while we were there. The pie had a two inch thick hard scum layer on the
top, uno like when you leave a pie unwrapped in the fridge for days--or
weeks? Oh well this is just my 2 cents.
