Denny's Den

 Denny's Den (401 Smithfield St., downtown) is a 1950s diner-style
restaurant. The menu features burgers (and, in a nod to the 1990s,
turkey burgers), steak subs, tuna melts, sandwiches of various sorts
(including club sandwiches and and reubens), soups, chili, and
so forth. They also have pies, malted shakes, banana splits, sodas,
and real cherry and vanilla cokes.

The food is pretty good. I had a cheese steak and the friend I was
with had a burger. The cheese steak was tasty (though not authentic
Philly); my friend says the burger (a bacon cheese burger) was very
good. And the vanilla cokes were done right. The prices are quite
reasonable. A cheese burger with fries is under $4.

They also serve breakfast, ranging from bacon and eggs and hot cakes,
to eggs with fried capicola or wieners. (Now, if they'd only offer
fried jumbo -- bologna for you foriegners reading this -- it'd be
 perfect.)

Recommended for a nice low-cost downtown lunch. It's a nice change
from the fast food burgers and fast food Chinese that dominates that
 downtown landscape.
