So far, I've tested a lot of Indian restaurants here in the 'burgh and my
two best buffets/all-round food are as follows:

Maharajah buffet in the Days Inn on Banksville Road, which is excellent
especially on Sundays, buffet includes chai, mango lhassi, sweet rice and
gulab jamun desserts. Excellent choice of at least 8 vegetarian dishes such
as curried eggplant, bhindi masala (curried fried okra), palak paneer
(curried spinach with cheese), and curried potato, and meat dishes like
curried lamb, curried chicken, and tandoori bbq. Has stuffed dosa and
pakoras, good selection of pickle and chutneys. Yogurt is excellent.
Sometimes unusual dishes. Spice is warmer on Sundays when restaurant is
 full of nationals.

India Garden buffet, not in Oakland but in Monroeville in the Goodwill/Value
City shopping centre across from the ski place on rte 22. Just past the
mall exchange going toward miracle mile. Excellent buffet, all amenities
except mango lhassi, but the tandoori is absolutely excellent and a very
large selection of vegetarian dishes. Sometimes unusual dishes like curried
goat, which is very rich and good. A Hindi Kung-Fu musical is on the telly
at all times, at least every time I've been there, and the waiters like to
 sing along.

Star of India in Oakland has a limited, but very tasty lunch buffet. Some
food is better made to order like mulligatawany soup.

If you are looking for Indian food, but not necessarily curry, don't
forget Udipi Cafe out near Monroeville (on Old William Penn Highway).
Udipi does dosas, uttapams and other southern delights (idli, vada,
etc.) Also, Namaste on Banksville Road is worth checking out, and they
do have a buffet - although it always seems to include at least one
 Indian-Chinese dish (often Gobi Manchurian).

Penn and Elmira. They have a good lunch buffet which is neither
exceptional nor expensive, which pretty much describes the rest of
their offerings too. I like 'em.

Peoples is a great choice and the buffet is more than reasonable.

The Sitar in Highland Park (across from Peppi's) is another good choice for
curry dishes. The have a great buffet for lunch.

I eat lunch at Maharajah at least twice/week. I haven't found it to be
unsanitary in any way. Not that I inspect the premises with a cotton swab,
but I think they do a very good job keeping the place, as well as the
utensils and plates clean. It is a bit dark in there, but I certainly don't
 go there for the atmosphere.

I'm very much a fan of Indian food buffets, and I'm pretty sure I've been to
all of them in the area. Maharajah is my personal favorite. The dishes at
the buffet are much spicier than most places - which I like - and the
selection is unequaled by any other Indian lunch buffet around here IMO. The
Maharaja is also one of the only buffets that includes drinks (softdrinks
and spiced tea as well as mango lhassi) in the price of the buffet.

I was not impressed by either the food or selection at Peoples'. I tried
Namaste recently and thought it had good food, but a limited selection. The
Taj Mahal out on McKnight (probably my second favorite) had a decent
selection and good food, but the place is a bit cramped (albeit well lit)
and it's a pain to get to from the city. Also tried Thali - way out on
Greentree Rd - small selection, but good food and a nice atmosphere.

Thali's in the Scott Towne Center - which, if you haven't been there, is a
bit hard to find. It's a few miles from the 279 Greentree exit and it sits
up on a hill. The phone number there is 412-278-4848 - if you don't know the
area, it might be worth a call. The proprietor was very helpful. My friend,
who knows authentic Indian fare much better than I do, said that it was
 truly "home style".
