: Has anyone been to Chez Gerard in Hopwood (Route 40 near Uniontown)?
: I'd appreciate any reviews.
I was there for Sunday Brunch a ncouple of weeks ago, and was not
impressed. I had a black bean soup appetizer that is claimed to
be a house specialty that I swear was just the stuff I get out of a can
and put on burritos at home - no intersting spice, garnish - nothing.
In addition, the soup was barely warm; a problem that recurred with other
dishes throughout the meal.
The ommlettes and savoury crepes my partner and I ordered for
our entrees were barely adequate, unflavorful, and almost cold by the time
we got them.
The dessert crepe I had was pretty good but at that point it was a
case of too little too late.
The service was not great but particualrly aggravating was the table
setting. We were seated outside in a passably nice garden, but the table's
paint was peeling and the placemats (very necessary) that we were given
were genuinely ratty cloth items. This is incomprehensible given the
aspiriation of the restaurant to provide you with a ritzy experience, e.g.,
the French waiters are in formal black and whites, bow-ties, etc...
On the "bizarre, redeeming" features side, the woman who is the
proprietor swans around to an amzing degree. As the legend of the restaurant
goes (which is repoduced for your benefit on the menu-backs, if I remember
rightly) she was a bigshot model in NYC, and met her co-proprietor French hus-
band, Gerard, while modelling in Paris! Well - she looks a heck of a lot like
Sharon Stone, and has *exactly* the manner and facial twitchiness of Ms Stone
(as she appears on talk shows).
So perhaps there is some sort of pleasure to be had there!
In conclusion, I'm prepared to believe that we struck Chez gerard on
a bad day, or that their brunch is to be avoided but that their other meals
are very good. But I won't waste the time and money to find this out. It was
a major disappointment. I'd definitely recommend brunch at either Linda
Ianotta's gallery (for about half the price!) or Victoria Hall (for a little
more money) over brunch at Chez Gerard.

Chez Gerard reviews?
My husband and I have been to Chez Gerard on 3 occasions, and we've had wonderful experiences there. We've always gone for dinner and eaten inside, so I can't comment on the outdoor brunch that a previous poster had! We've found their food to be excellent and the ambience to be quite similar to restaurants in France. In particular, I remember their salade au chevre chaud to be quite excellent as a first course and the quail stuffed with grapes & apples to be amazing! Plus, we always have fun with the cheese course. Their desserts are also quite tasty, as is their house cocktail, a kir royale. I'd recommend taking advantage of their 7-course prix fixe menu; I believe it's $35. Their menu changes seasonally. Don't expect to have a quick dining experience at Chez Gerard. In true French fashion, most meals take about 2 hours or more. We have enjoyed every minute of our time there! Barbara
