So I went to the newly-remodeled cheese cellar tonight with some friends. It wasn't bad; the food was decent and the new decor is pretty. The cheese&beer fondue was tasty, but didn't come with enough bread and apples. The chocolate fondue was also good, and came with a nice, sizable assortment of fruits and such (but who would dip canteloupe into chocolate? ew.). There were a few annoying bits, though. The service was surprisingly slow, even though the restaraunt didn't appear to be all that busy. A friend who ordered a cheeseburger got charged extra for the cheese. Also, soda refills were $1.75 each, which really irritates me. I don't understand why a supposedly nice restaraunt that's already charging a lot for food and alcohol feels the need to gouge customers for something that really costs a completely trivial amount (a glass of soda is what, three cents worth of syrup and water?). And even if they feel the need to do that, they should at least make it clear to customers. So many restaraunts provide free refills these days that it was a bit of a shock to see the $1.75/refill charge on the bill. I wish the server had told us about that. So, basically, the food was okay, the decor was nice, but I ended up feeling overcharged and underserved. I probably won't be back unless dragged along by someone else. --nat
Pittsburgh, PA
cheese cellar
My wife and I went to Station Square Saturday night. Big mistake really as we were stuck in terrible traffic going and leaving. Anyway, we walked around a bit trying to decide where to eat and decided on the Cheese Cellar. Didn't like it years ago but it had been years since we had been there and I thought I remembered some discussion on this group of big changes. Don't know what has changed. Truly uninspired, nearly tasteless, poorly prepared and presented food, unenthusiastic service. Don't know how it stays open but it was easy to see why there was no wait for a table.
