I was born & raised in Philly. There are those who would tell you that Pat's Steaks in South Philly (9th & Passyunk) is the place to go. I disagree. Go to Dellasandro's in Roxborough (Henry Avenue just east of Roxborough Avenue). Have it with 'the sauce'. (BTW: never, ever, put mayo or lettuce on a Philly Cheesesteak.) --Wilson.

For shear cheesesteak excellence these can't be beat, though they're : just a little (15-20 minutes from Center City) off the beaten track. Try : them if you have time. Actually there's an area not far from D'Allesandro's that's definitely worthwhile visiting if you're an out of towner on a short trip to Philly. Its called Mannyunk (and I am sure I spelled that wrong). Go to Main Street. Here, you'l find lots of shops, restaurants, and other sites to see along the river. Its well worth a visit, espcially after a Philly chesse steak. Walk around for a little while and than head over to a place on Main Street called Mainly Desserts. They have a fantastic selection of home made confections and coffee and teas to wash down their food. This is also a lot less congested than some areas down in Center City so for those folks who want to experience Philadelphia, but hate congestion, go to Main Street, but also go other than a nice Saturday night when there will be congestion.

No, it's not. The best are from Dellasandro's in the Roxborough section of Philly.

I *really* said that I think the best cheesesteaks are at D'Allessandro's in Roxborough, not Jim's (or Pat's or Geno's for that Matter!). Please get your attributions correct. I still live here and things *do* change! D'Allesandro's wins! No contest. K. Karen Byrd, VAX Sys./Net. The best Philly Steak sandwhich is sold by a place called American Pizza which is on Cottmon Avenue in Northeast Philly a few blocks west of Northeast High School. One reason why I don't like Jim's much is because one thing I absolutely must have with my cheese steak sandwhich is an order of french fries. Jim's doesn't see french fries, at least not the last time I walked by there. When you get right down to it though, there really is no "best" of anything particularly where Philly cheese steak sandwhiches go. There are many places in Philadelphia and some in the nearby suburbs that make superb cheese steaks.
