Looking for Restaurants in Portland Oregon
One of the truly fine restaurants on the West Coast is Genoa in Portland. Prix fixe dinners with a long reservations list. Well worth the effort!! Someone wrote: #I will be visiting Portland Oregon for about a week in March. Recommendations #welcome. I will be staying in the Milwaukie area. # #Thank you #Tamra Please allow this Portland native (who eats out 3-4 time per week) to help. I' ll keep my recommendations short for this list. Do not hesitate to e-mail me directly with specific preferences. Best Near Milwaukie: Caprial's (Northwest eclectic; short menu featuring whatever is fresh and good) All around best: Couvron (Northwest/French; rated #1 in Gourmet magazine; elegant in every respect; downtown Portland--west edge) Best steakhouse: The Ringside (onion rings a must have; I prefer the filet, others swear by the New York and still others by the ribeye; a Portland favorite for decades; on West Burnside near downtown Portland) Best breakfast food: The Original Pancake House (S.W. Barbur Blvd.; south of downtown; others may argue, but the lines speak for themselves; open Wed-Sun only; another place around for decades) Best Indian Food: Bombay Cricket Club (fine selection of curries, tandoori preparations and middle eastern items to boot; cricket matches on video to watch while you wait for your food) Many excellent choices in N.W.Portland including Wildwood, Zefiro, Papa Haydn (great desserts here), Kornblatt's deli, Escape from New York pizza and Garbanzo's (glorified falafel stand, but tasty stuff and open into the wee hours). The prior poster's recommendation of Genoa is right on the mark. It has always been rated as one of Portland's top two or three. Only rap is that the diner is given only 3 or 4 choices for entrees, with the remaining courses the same for all; fortunately, everything is superb.) I cannot agree regarding Typhoon! (whose original location is in N.W. Portland). Food is quite good, but portions are small, prices are high and the service can range from moderately friendly to glacially indifferent. The gent working the front of the room (chef/owner's husband) is sort of L.A. meets Jerry Lewis. His favorite line (delivered in an unmistakenly patronizing tone): "Have you decided what you'd like or can I confuse you further?). There are plenty of other good Thai (and other Asian) restaurants in and around town where you don't have to deal with this crap: Lamthong, Tara Thai, Thai Orchid, Beau Thai and Saigon Kitchen (Thai and Vietnamese) to name a few. Hope you enjoy your trip. Let me know if you need any further information.
Typhoon is an excellent restaurant. Another great place if you are in the mood for Italian is Piccolo Mondo Restoranti located at John's Landing on SW Macadam. It's been there for 20 years with the same owner. It has also won Wine Specators Award of Excellence for the past 9 years for their Italian wine list. The building it is located in used to be an old furniture factory which has been converted into a unique mall.
Esparza's Tex-Mex Cafe, Papa Haydn's, Kashmir's, Jarra's Ethiopian, II Patio, The Heathman, Jake's, Bijou Cafe, La Catalana, Marsee Bakery, Le Bistro Montage and Zefiro's--Just to name a few!! I love to eat in Portland. So many great choices and so little time. I haven't been there for a couple of years so I'm sure many new places have opened. Have a great time. Wish I was there! DRoss
