My favorite somewhat near the Convention Center is Assaggio's. I've attached the web site of a recent (April 2001) review by the Oregonian.

McCormick & Schmick
Jake's Grill or Jake's Famous Crawfish
Opus Jazz Cafe

Stanfords in Lake Oswego (even though it's a "chain"-type, you've gotta go in and ask for Paul as your server. Tell him Todd sent you.)

We had a good Thai meal at E-San (SW 2nd. Ave and Pine, I believe). Just a block further is the Bijou Cafe (3rd Ave and Pine) which has a great breakfast. Also had a good meal (Lebanese) at Al-Amin (on SW Stark and 4th, I think). Great Mexican Tacqueria (Maya) on the corner of SW 10th Ave and whatever street is south of Alder.

For seafood, any of the McCormick & Schmick;s restaurants are the right place to go. I think you'll be closest to their location of First Ave., but all four Portland locations are within reasonable distance of the convention center. All you'll have to do is cross the river.

For Thai, try Typhoon in Northwest, or Bangkok Kitchen in inner Southeast.

For pub fare, any McMenamins location ought to do. Lots of good beer and burgers and such. There's also the Horse Brass Pub, a great facsimile of an English pub with plenty of beer, sausages, scotch, more beer and more sausages (and fish'n'chips, too!).

If you like Tex-Mex, go to Esparza's. It's one of my absolute favorite restaurants.
