Oh...here is the story of their family, they escaped germany during the war.... Maya's is named after the first granddaughter of Gerd and Edith Buchheim. Gerd Buchheim, age 14, the son of a dry goods salesman, escaped Germany just as WWII was starting and settled with his family in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Edith Block, age 5, the daughter of a shoemaker, also escaped and settled in La Paz, Bolivia. As luck would have it, someone fixed the two of them up. They each claim that back then, they didn't like one another. Well, they got married and came to the United States about 1954, eventually settling down in Cincinnati. Gerd continued on with his baking career, which he started in Bolivia. He began at Buskens and went on to open Buchheim Bakery in Golf Manor in 1960. After 13 years Gerd decided to expand his horizons by helping several small bakeries get started. In 1981 he became the Executive Pastry Chef of the brand new Westin Hotel in Cincinnati. For the next 6 years, he and Edith worked together making the Westin Hotel one of the premier dessert & pastry sources in Cincinnati. In 1988 they opened up The Pastry Shoppe in Old Montgomery and soon ran out of room. They now bring you Maya's, offering the same wonderful desserts, pastries & tortes. With the help of their son, Jay, they are including breakfast, lunch, dinner and ice cream. As always, they use only the best, freshest ingredients available. Say hi, from Lasher, if you stop by, they know who I am.
