Winston-Salem has a few notable restaurants, amidst the crowd of chains and steakhouses. Nobles is by far the best, with European character, high ceilings, wood fired oven. It gets rave reviews by everyone I know whose gone, and has a cosmopolitan feel. South by Southwest is also quite good, although very different in character. It is Mexican/California style menu, with an imaginative chef, and fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is cozier than Nobles, and less formal, although I wouldn't call Nobles stuffy. Leon's would also be rated quite good, although not in Noble's league. However, the atmosphere is more intimate. I think most people would be happy with the food here. It has a menu that changes nightly. Also there is jazz on selected nights. There are other good steakhouses (I think Staley's is one) but not being a red meat and potatoes fan, I can't tell you about them.
