For those that don't know, the Steel Porcupine just opened in Raleigh on the southwest corner of the intersection of Peace Street and Glenwood Avenue.

Talked to somebody today that had dinner there last night. Thought it was very good. Said the deck was packed, but that they had no problem being seated inside right away. It appears that the deck will be a place that's a seen...I mean a scene.

He had a prime rib that he rated as among the very best he has ever had. Said the portions were enormous; the rib was "about this thick" (hold thumb and index finger about 2" apart). Said it was not cheap, but you got a lot of food.

That's all I know right now.

I ate there last night with my wife and mother-in-law. The chef is definitely trying to make something different. Unusual dishes, and all were well prepared and tasty. We had: Pear Cheese salad - didn't try it, but it looked okay Quill salad (house) - It was a good house salad. I had the bacon bleu cheese dressing. I like more dressing than what they provided. Blue potatoe ??? appetizer - Mashed blue potatos, quickly fried, with chorizo and a dijon sauce. Very good. 'Spine' of the day: Lobter and shrimp kebab. Well done, interesting serving with star fruit. Soup of the day - blueberry. A sweet cream cold soup with blueberries. Could have easily have been a desert. Tasty, a little to sweet for my tastebuds as an appetizer. Lamb shank - good size serving and also tasty. I only had a little bite since my wife did not want to share that much. Veal porterhouse with blueberry glaze, garlic mashed potatoes, and side veggies. This is what I ordered. First time I've have ever had a veal porterhouse, and it was delicious. The glaze was not overpowering, which I feared, and the potatos were smooth (I personally like a little chunkiness) and well flavored. Veggies were carrots, zucchini, and snow peas, lightly sauteed. 3 sorbets - mango, black currant, and lemon. Good and refreshing. Chocolate mousse/souffle - I forget what they called it, but it was described as between a mousse and a souffle. It had milk, white, and dark chocolate layers. Mmmmm. I liked it.

We will be going back, since there were plenty of other offerings on the menu that sounded good. Service was good and friendly. Waiters and waitresses help each other out freely. Huge patio out front. Not exactly a great view, but seemed to be a good mix of people, with a slight majority of the 25-35 crowd.

I've eaten there twice. The food is pretty good, but you have to like mashed potatoes since many of the selections include these in one form or another. The chef must really like them prepared that way. John Lesnik

The food may be good, but the word from my waiter friends is that the sanitary conditions are appalling! Every rainstorm, they get sewage backup an inch or two deep, and so far the city health inspectors haven't caught them.....
