I just wanted to let people know about a really good new Italian restaurant which recently opened in Durham. It's called "Tony Z's" and went into the building where "Catherine's Corner Cafe" used to be (corner of Hillsborough and Trent/Oakland). We were leary at first, but had a wonderful experience. The waitstaff, though somewhat inexperienced, was very attentive and helpful. The food was excellent (the best fried calamari I'd ever had! a wonderful gorgenzola/cream sauce with tortellini, tostadas instead of rolls....), the servings generous, and the price moderate (slightly more than Macaroni Grill). We asked about the owner (Tony Zacharelli or something similar), and was told he is a native Italian who has spent time working in Florida and NY before coming to Durham.

I have no affiliation with the restaurant. I happen to live within walking distance and was disappointed when Catherine's closed - I want this place to stay! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

I have also eaten there several times. This restaurant shows promise. It does seem to take a while to be served but this seems to be because they cook each order separately. The pasta is quite good as a result.

They tend to use too much oil, though. I've had dishes that didn't and they have been delicious. This is a needed improvement.

We haven't had a reasonable italian restaurant since Villa Donna closed. Pops is eclectic and high-end. Sometimes you just want good spaghetti or linguini. Tony's might end up being the place.

Also, SueAnnes on Chapel Hill Road (where Suman's and the Blue Nile once were) has great spaghetti with meat sauce, not to mention their vegetables. The sauce has a real homemade flavor with good sauteed onions, etc.
