Mexican Heat

As I contemplate the summer swelter upon us, I know that for the last few Mexican food threads, there has been a general lament as to the lameness of spiciness encountered.

This post is to point out a limited opportunity for those of you so inclined to sweat from the forehead while eating, regardless of the ambient temperature. The El Rodeo on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh has on their menu a couple of items sure to please. Both of them feature a salsa verde (green sauce) that is pretty potent: the bistec (steak strips) en salsa verde, and the carnitas (pork chunks) en salsa verde.

The portions are generous, the meat is quite good. They run about $7.50. I have found them to be most enjoyable. I suspect that one could even make special requests to have the salsa verde added to other menu items, though I have not made such a request. Wait staff is attentive, and the chips and salsa are fresh and free with the meal.

All in all, about the best place in Raleigh I have found for what I fondly call the "slop mexican" style of mexican food.

But nowhere even among the more pretentious mexican places have I encountered such a robustly hot sauce.

Regards

There is a fairly new restaurant in Wendell that has rather spicy food and sauces. It seems to be authentic Mexican not Americanized.
