My wife and I decided to try McKenzie's for dinner tonight. We were not disappointed.

The restaurant has been open since March of this year. I spoke with the owner and it sounds like it's still a work in progress. He's taken over the business space on both sides of the restaurant, and will expand accordingly.

McKenzie's is located behind the Jiffy Lube on Hwy 98. This is near the US 1 intersection as well. I'd describe it as a family restaurant on one side, and a nice bar on the other side. We were on the family side and I never detected the scent of smoke anywhere. Ventilation was excellent.

I had "Captain Bob's Seafood Platter,' which was the usual flounder, shrimp, oysters, and deviled crab combo; with scallops($1 extra) the small plate was $13.95, and I brought some home. A large version was $13.95. Cheryl had the skewered (broiled) shrimp for $12.95, but we agreed it was a little on the 'small' side (2 skewers) and serving-wise, could be improved upon. The food came out very fast once we'd ordered.

There are various other seafood platters and combinations available. No steak, but some burgers and sandwiches. Their emphasis is on fresh seafood, and they delivered a nice Calabash-style that was absolutely not greasy in any way. It was as good as anything I've had at the Farmer's Mkt. or Kemps - right on par. There is also a good selection of sides, dessert, and appetizers. There is enough variety even for those who don't like seafood, IMO.

I'll add that their traffic is by word of mouth, as they've done little to no advertising. We only recently noticed this place, but the parking lot was completely full and the restaurant very busy. It's a great alternative to Shucker's and a relief to know we can get seafood this good so much closer to where we live.

Tom Gauldin, this has to go on your must-visit list next time you're back in town. It even beats Burkenstocks in its heyday, and I'm not kiddin'.

I'll also add that I'm not a sportscaster, nor do I play one on TV.
